Meet the Scoutmaster
I have been Scoutmaster of Troop 72 since July 1, 2008, but my Scouting career goes back over 20 years. In 1989, I signed on as a Den Leader when my son, Matt, joined Pack 72.During the next four years, I served as both Den Leader and Webelos Leader.I joined Troop 72 as an Assistant Scoutmaster in 1993 when Matt crossed over into the Troop. However, I also stayed on as a Den Leader in Pack 72 to help Don Rother and Bob Schopf with Den 1.During those next four years, I also served as Assistant Cubmaster and Cubmaster for the Pack. During the 1995-1996 timeframe, I had the privilege to serve on the core committee which oversaw the movement of Pack 72 and Troop 72 from the old Camp Moritz facility to the property that is now called Camp Spirit. This committee was responsibility for procuring the land for Camp Spirit, designing the new Scout Building, as well as its construction.
Since joining Troop 72 in 1993, I have sponsored several camping weekends – the PA Grand Canyon, Black Moshannon State Park, West Point, Annapolis, US Coast Guard Station at Cape May, Gettysburg, and several North Valley District Camporees.I also started the Troop 72 website back in 1996.Since 1997, I have had the honor of acting as Master of Ceremonies for 29 Eagle Courts of Honor that have been held at Camp Spirit.I also coordinated the effort of Troop 72 to help Scoutreach Troops 83 and 393, including joint campouts.
Snowbound is my favorite Scouting event, especially when the weather is cold and snowing! I also enjoy the other district camping events where we get the chance to meet Scouts and Leaders from other troops. I am a strong advocate of the boy-run program in Boy Scouts and that we have a responsibility for providing community service activities for our Scouts. I have also chaired three Snowbound events for North Valley District.Currently, I am a member of the North Valley District Committee, the Friends of Scouting presentation team, the training team for Scoutmaster Specifics and Fundamentals for new leaders, and webmaster for the District website. In 2008, I completed my Wood Badge Training.
I graduated in 1972 from Lebanon Valley College with a BS Degree in Chemistry and earned an MA Degree from Wesleyan University in 1974.I worked for two years at Bristol-Meyers Squibb in NJ and then went back to school at Lehigh University to complete work for my Doctorate Degree in Chemistry. My working career resumed in 1979 with Air Products and Chemicals where I worked for 30 years as an analytical-chemist, retiring in March 2009. Currently, I am an independent, part-time consultant to Intertek ASA. I have been married to Cilla (our Troop 72 Committee Chairperson) for 36 years. Our son, Matt, earned his Eagle from Troop 72 in 1998 and currently lives in Vienna, Virgina and works at the American College of Cardiology in Washington, DC in their video-media department. He was married to Katie Moore on October 1, 2011.
Here is a wonderful poem called “The Scout Leader” which was written by Doug Hanna, who was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 72. Doug passed away in 2007 after losing a battle with cancer. His wife, Lori, found the handwritten version of this poem among some old documents in 2008. Doug wrote the poem as a farewell to his Scout Troop in Nebraska before the Hanna Family moved to the Allentown area in 1995. I want to share it with the entire Troop 72 family. Click here.
